![]() A light source is placed behind a white cloth screen between two banana trees, and the show is accompanied by a mini band of drums, clarinets, and gongs. A typical Kelantan shadow play consists of cut-out puppets for gods, humans, demons, apes, and lesser creatures made from animal hides. This art has been preserved to this day as an important artistic and cultural representative of Malaysian culture. ![]() Malaysian shadow plays originated in Kelantan and spread to other regions of the country including Melayu, Gedek, and Purwa. However, most don't realize that this ancient form of Chinese art was introduced to Southeast Asia in the 13th Century and took root there. With a long history and strong appeal, this form of art is still popular among Chinese people. In the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368), the art was introduced to West Asia and Europe. According to historical records, shadow plays were born in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) and flourished in the Tang (618-907) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Shadow plays are one of the oldest forms of drama in China and an ancient folk tradition and art that originated in Huaxian County, Shaanxi Province. Figures crafted from animal hides, alongside a light source, a white screen, and some music, can open the door to a wonderful black-and-white world. People often find a piece of themselves in the shadows. They can depict happiness and sadness, courage and timidity, good and evil. They can capture perfect silhouettes of anything in the world while eliminating specific texture. Shadows are also commonly used for entertainment. In the chapter titled "Capital's Entertainment Center and the Industry of Arts and Handicrafts" in the book The Eastern Capital: A Dream of Splendors Past, the record says, "Dingyi and Shouji play a kind of 'qiaoying show'.Shadows are a common optical phenomenon that have long inspired the imagination. At that time, there were different types of shadow play. As the demand grew, craftsmen gradually formed a professional trade. This proves that the shadow theater was further developed in the period from the Northern Dynastyto the Southern Dynasty. Wulin was the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty(1127-1279), and was also known as Lin'an (now Hangzhouin Zhejiang Province). ![]() This professional trade was recorded in the Former Events in Wulin. In the painting entitled "The Festival of Pure Brightness on the River" by Zhang Zeduan, a well known Song Dynasty genre artist, a puppet show and the like can be seen as an entertainment activity enjoyed by the folks in the capital of Bianliang.ĭuring the Song period, evidence for the prosperous shadow theater can also be obtained from the record of a newly emerging trade of professional craftsmen who carved and made shadow puppets. And its text of dialogue is quite like a narrative textbook of history." The capital referred to here was Bianliang (today's Kaifengof Henan Province), the then capital of the Northern Song Dynasty(960-1127). ![]() It says: "The shadow show is played by people in the capital with figures and patterns carved and cut out from white paperin the initial stage and later on from painted sheep's skin. In An Account of the Capital's Wonders published in the Song period, a general description can be found of the materials that were used to make shadow puppets and the development of their variations as well as the contents of performance. Hence the show of images of the wars among the kingdoms of Wei, Shu, and Wu has been handed down to the present. According to the Records of the Origins of Events by Gao Cheng of the Song Dynasty, during the reign of Emperor Renzong, there were some people who could tell Romance of the Three Kingdoms stories or make puppets for a shadow play adapted from the stories. In temples, shadow figures were used as the supposed souls of the dead when their sin was expiated after death by monk preachers in charge of public service.ĭuring the Song Dynasty, it became one type of the prosperous folk arts, combined with the genre of popular entertainment mainly consisting of talking and singing. During that period, it served as a media for the preaching of Buddhist Dharma of transmigration and retribution. According to a survey made by the late writer Sun Kaidi, Chinese shadow play dated back to the mid-or late Tang Dynasty, or the later Five Dynasties(907-960). ![]()

In Cannon Fodder, soldiers can be lost not only to enemy fire, but also because of shrapnel when destroying enemy buildings or even getting caught in quicksand. You must decide the best way to complete them, sometimes at the expense of some of your own soldiers. Each phase has different objectives, such as defeating all enemies on the map or rescuing hostages. For this, you can assign each of the three possible groups to be controlled by the AI while you put your plan into motion. Your tactical abilities are put to the test, as everything happens in real time, and micro-managing eight units might prove too difficult or simply not a wise choice. The directional pad moves the cursor, and two buttons are used for moving and shooting, respectively. The gameplay of Cannon Fodder is a simple point-and-click, which translated perfectly to the many platforms and allowed it to ignore the various limitation of each console. All soldiers are equipped with machine guns (which have unlimited ammunition), and may also carry grenades and rockets found on the map. Each level may consist of several phases, and fallen soldiers are replaced with new recruits at the beginning of each new phase, while those who survive an entire mission are promoted and receive an increase in their abilities (rate of fire, accuracy and range). The game puts you in command of up to eight soldiers who can be divided into up to three groups. ![]() ![]() The Royal British Legion actually insisted on displaying their lack of endorsement at the introduction screen. ![]() It also adds a little variety to a page full of words. I think this reinforces what you have already stated about these just being linear or exponential functions. On parts 3 & 4 you may want to provide a table or part of a graph and ask them for the 40th term or something. I have a couple of items for consideration. I like the tiled diagrams at the start – especially where you can visually see a squared term and a linear term. But I like the idea that we can use sequences to talk about growth/rate of change… So maybe that might be an interesting way to go about end behavior of rational functions? ![]() And then we can analyze the quotient of the sequences… Or something. & series as our second unit, when we do rational functions, we can treat something like (2x^2-5x+1)/(-3x^3-1) as two sequences (the top polynomial sequence, and the bottom polynomial sequence). One thing I thought of that might be cool is that now that we’re doing seq. But I’m learning how to be less teacher-centered and this is something I know I have to practice doing (even if I do it poorly for a (long) while). I’m excited/nervous to see if I can make it work in class… some group, some individual, some homework… Mainly I’m worried about debriefing and having that go smoothly and not take AN INSANE AMOUNT OF TIME and going over everything. Thanks! I’m pretty proud of it, but we’ll see how it goes once I actually USE it. But I understand I am giving them A LOT of scaffolding with which to do it. I’m liberally defining problem solving as having students deal with situations they have never dealt with before, and generalizing from those situations. I’m super nervous, but we’ll see if this is an experiment that fails or not. But I think there is so much depth and abstract thinking that can be brought out of a unit properly done. From what I’ve heard from teachers everywhere, sequences and series always get short shrift in precalculus classes because they come at the end of the year. Usually I think classes do this whole unit in single week, and there’s no way we’ll be done with it in that time. Lastly, yes, I know this is a long packet. Huge thanks in the creation of this goes to who went through a lot of it page by page and gave excellent suggestions! Precalculus guru! Also I included a few blogposts at the end of the document which I stole wholesale from or adapted in my own way. The packet with my teacher notes, and the packet without my teacher notes. Students are asked to conjecture and defend their conjecture at various times. There are connections drawn to graphs, and to a few geometric visualizations of sequences and series. The motivation for sequences comes out of a series of IQ-test-ish puzzles, and the motivation for series comes out of a lottery problem. The last thing I have to say is that although it may look pretty traditional (the questions), try to think about the packet if you were a student and you were in a class going through it. I’m not great at the former, but I’m definitely getting better at the latter. I guess what I mean to say is: these packets/worksheets that I tend to create don’t make kids like/love math, but it does get them to think about math. To put it out there: I would never say that what I do is inherently engaging for my kids. It also gets at almost all the standard things in a sequences and series unit (except for recursive equations, which I threw out). It’s simply a scaffolded way to help kids think in an increasingly abstract way. This is the first time I’m creating an entire guided unit. Those of you who know me know that I am a pretty traditional teacher, and I have gotten in the habit of creating guided worksheets as a structural backbone for a lot of my classes. I like that we’ll be doing it early in the year, because I want them to see immediately that we are not going to be focusing on plug-and-chug but real thinking. ![]() Our department is also trying to integrate more problem solving in the curriculum, and so I tried to make this unit involve as much problem solving as possible. The other teacher and I have decided to totally mess around with the ordering of topics, and we put sequences and series as the second unit. It’s a new course for me: Advanced Precalculus. Instead I started, abandoned, and restarted a unit for a course that I’m teaching next year. I had great ambitions to do a lot of schoolwork this summer. ![]() ![]() It is not a small feat to draw a complete anime character, but by mastering all the different parts needed, you are able to draw the character you are imagining.įace and head as a whole, body, and clothing, and you have a complete anime character in your hands. Size really matters with these styles, and it can be said that where continuous style is no longer looking aesthetically pleasing, it is time to make it non-continuous. The continuous style is trying to hold on to the human anatomy, though only barely. The other style is non-continuous, meaning that the eyelids are disconnected and thus break human eye anatomy completely. So there are two types of eyes, one being continuous, where the eyelids do connect. Then again, manga and anime do not know reality in that sense.
